Endodontic retreatment is necessary if a tooth with a previous root canal becomes reinfected. When this occurs the root filling material in the tooth must be completely removed and the interior of the tooth disinfected again. Once this is finished, a new filling is placed in the tooth. Endodontic retreatments are usually completed in two visits with a medicated dressing placed in the tooth between appointments.
